Tessa Chico
Caring for Others in Aspiration and in Deed
By Raphael Maurice
"It’s inspiring to see young individuals like Tessa Chico who are clear about their goals and aspirations. Using both sides of her brain, she is poised to provide care and organization in her future career."
For Tessa Chico, a senior at Momence High School, her hometown has played a pivotal role in shaping her future. The town, the school, the people, and her family have helped her profoundly reach where she is today. Chico plans to pursue a career in radiology and is deeply interested in science. However, her interest in English demonstrates her well-rounded academic abilities. Tessa manages both the scientific and artistic sides of her brain; while she may apply the scientific-mathematical side to her future work, she is also a skilled writer.
One individual to whom she is grateful is Mr. Toberman. Speaking of his influence, she notes, “He's very passionate about everything. My eighth-grade year, we were his first class. He had to step in as an English teacher because we lost ours. I feel like anytime you ask him about anything, he always can give you a thirty-minute response. He's very passionate and smart. And I’d like to follow that.” It’s clear that educators like Toberman make a significant impact, as they have in Tessa Chico’s life.
Tessa’s father, a hard worker with constant projects around their home, can fix just about anything. “He's always, always busy. And he's always doing stuff in the house. There's always new projects going on in the house,” Tessa says admiringly of her dad. Meanwhile, her mom, known as the food director at Momence, is often busy in the school kitchen. Starting as a substitute in the lunchroom, she now manages it. This connection is another thread that ties Tessa’s family to Momence, the school, and the community.
Tessa appreciates rural areas, with their cornfields and sparse populations. This place is truly home to her. The bustle and traffic of cities stress her out. “I don’t like it,” she admits. “But I like living in rural areas.” With some luck, Tessa might stay in Momence to practice radiology. Wherever she practices, that place will benefit from her expertise and care. And it’s unlikely she’ll forget an appointment, thanks to her organization skills and determination.
Tessa acknowledges her strengths, including her organization and determination. “I have very high standards for myself,” she says. “I expect good for myself, and if I don’t meet those standards, I’m disappointed.” She handles these expectations with grace and intelligence, traits that will serve her well in radiology. Accepted to Ball State, she may soon begin her program there.
It’s inspiring to see young individuals like Tessa Chico who are clear about their goals and aspirations. Using both sides of her brain, she is poised to provide care and organization in her future career. Tessa is exactly where she needs to be, and there’s no stopping her from achieving her high standards.
