Sabas Tores-Miranda
Embracing Every Challenge and Every Opportunity
High school freshman Sabas Tores-Miranda shares his journey of growth, friendship, and future aspirations.
“I love the policemen here. I want to be like them one day.”
As Sabas Tores-Miranda prepares to transition from Momence Junior High to high school, he reflects on his journey with an enthusiasm that is both infectious and inspiring. Sabas, an eighth-grader with special needs, has embraced his unique path with determination and a cheerful outlook. His story is a testament to the supportive community of Momence and the enriching experiences he has had both in school and at home.
Sabas’ journey began with the unwavering support of his family. Growing up on a farm, Sabas has developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. “We have cows, donkeys, horses, and roosters,” he shares. “I help out with the animals, though sometimes I get a bit lazy,” he adds with a laugh. The farm life has taught Sabas responsibility and the value of hard work, qualities that he carries with him in all his endeavors.
At school, Sabas has made a name for himself as a friendly and active student. He enjoys a variety of sports, including football, soccer, and basketball. “Just give me a ball, and I’m ready to go,” he says with a gleam in his eye. His enthusiasm for sports is matched by his dedication to his studies. With the help of his teachers, Sabas has been able to navigate the challenges of his academic journey. “Ms. Horner, Ms. Keller, and Ms. Warren have been amazing,” he says. “They help me with everything from history to government tests.”
Sabas’ friends have also played a crucial role in his life. Marcus, Knox, and Chloe are among his closest companions, and he looks forward to continuing his friendship with them in high school. “It’s fun to hang out with them,” he says. The support and camaraderie he shares with his friends have made his school experience enjoyable and fulfilling.
Despite his special needs, Sabas has never let anything hold him back. His interest in becoming a policeman showcases his ambition and desire to make a positive impact in his community. “I love the policemen here,” he says. “Their techniques and dedication inspire me. I want to be like them one day.”
Sabas’ journey is also marked by his family’s rich heritage. His grandmother, who passed away three years ago, has left a lasting impression on him. “She worked hard raising my mom,” he recalls. Although she was born in Mexico, she moved to the United States and made a life for herself and her family. Sabas is keen to learn more about his family’s history and is always curious about his parents’ past. “I ask my mom a lot of questions about how she met my dad,” he says with a smile. It is clear that family has been an important presence in his life, and that he places a high value upon it.
One of the unique aspects of Sabas’ personality is his ability to stay calm and composed in the face of challenges. “Not much makes me nervous,” he shares. This calm demeanor is evident in his approach to life and school. Whether it’s handling the roosters on the farm or preparing for high school, Sabas faces each day with a positive attitude and a readiness to take on whatever comes his way.
As he looks forward to high school, Sabas is excited about the opportunities and new experiences that await him. He plans to join the football team and continue his love for sports. He is also eager to see his sisters at school and build on the foundation he has created in junior high. “I’m looking forward to seeing my friends and making new ones,” he says.
Sabas Tores-Miranda’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of community support. His journey is a testament to the nurturing environment of Momence Schools and the dedication of its teachers and staff. As Sabas steps into high school, he carries with him the lessons learned on the farm, the friendships forged in junior high, and the unwavering support of his family.
In Momence, every student has a unique story, and Sabas’ story is one of perseverance, friendship, positivity, and a bright future. His journey inspires us all to embrace our challenges, cherish our support systems, and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. Sabas is not just a student, or anything else to be fit into a box; he is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of community and family.
As he continues his journey, Sabas Tores-Miranda reminds us all that with the right support and a positive attitude, anything is possible. Momence is both proud and fortunate to have students like Sabas, who embody the spirit of determination and community that defines this special place.
