Logan Sweeney

Finding Order in the Chaos

BY BARRY ENGELHARDT

“The simplest answer is often the best.”

In the crowded corridors, amidst the usual teenage chatter about the latest music or athletic achievements, eighth-grader Logan Sweeney strikes a unique chord. His passion for mathematics is not just palpable; it’s infectious. As he leans in to share tales of his mathematical conquests, his voice quickens with enthusiasm, a testament to his genuine love for the subject.

Logan’s journey into the world of numbers began amusingly early. “I first realized I loved math in first grade,” he quips, comparing the revelation to his less-than-stellar experiences in PE class. It’s clear from the outset that Logan’s approach to math is anything but ordinary. With a humor that belies his years, he describes himself and his sister, Mackenzie, as “the brightest dumb crayons you’ll ever meet,” a playful nod to their academic prowess and sibling rivalry.

For the past three years, Logan has been a steadfast participant in the Momence Invitational Math Competition, showcasing his skills in both relay and mental events. His description of the relay, a team-based challenge where he occupies the crucial middle seat, reflects his strategic mindset. “The simplest answer is often the best,” he explains, underscoring the importance of clarity and teamwork. Meanwhile, the mental event’s demand for speed and accuracy highlights Logan’s individual prowess.

Outside the competitive arena, Logan’s academic journey is equally impressive. Enrolled in Algebra I alongside high school freshmen, he relishes the daily walk to the high school, a ritual that occasionally allows him to “harass” his sister in the hallways. This playful banter between siblings adds a layer of warmth to his story, revealing a family where intellectual challenges and support go hand in hand.

Logan’s love for mathematics extends beyond the classroom and competitions. He finds solace and structure in numbers, applying mathematical concepts to his everyday life and hobbies, such as building intricate Lego sets. “Numbers just get me,” he admits with a grin, relishing the complexity that baffles many. His ability to navigate complicated problems and share his solutions underscores a keen intellect and a generous spirit.

Amidst discussions of algebra and equations, Logan’s aspirations for the future emerge. Inspired by a blend of analytical skill and a flair for the dramatic, he dreams of becoming a Crime Scene Investigator. In a world where many see chaos, Logan perceives a puzzle awaiting solution, a series of angles and calculations that, when deciphered, reveal the hidden truths of a scene. This unique perspective is his “secret source of knowledge,” a mathematical lens through which he views potential crime scenes.

Yet, for all his achievements and ambitions, Logan doesn’t take himself too seriously. He jokes about the future, envisioning a time of post-high school chaos when his biggest concern will be the amount of coffee he can enjoy. This blend of humor, humility, and intelligence makes Logan’s story not just one of mathematical talent but of a well-rounded individual navigating adolescence with curiosity and confidence.

Reflecting on his journey, Logan’s narrative is a compelling reminder of the joy and fulfillment found in pursuing one’s passions. Whether discussing the “Hamilton” soundtrack— another of his loves—or explaining a complex math problem, his enthusiasm is a beacon for fellow students. It challenges the stereotype of the disinterested teen, presenting a vibrant picture of youth engaged, excited, and empowered by the pursuit of knowledge.

As Logan Sweeney continues to carve his path, from the classrooms of Momence to the potential crime scenes of the future, his story stands as a testament to the power of passion, the importance of humor, and the endless possibilities that lie at the intersection of the two. For Logan, math is more than a subject—it’s a way of understanding the world, a constant companion in his quest for knowledge, and a foundation for a future as limitless as the equations he so loves to solve.

In the grand scheme of things, Logan Sweeney is more than just a bright young mathematician; he’s a beacon of inspiration, proving that with a little humor and a lot of hard work, finding order in the chaos isn’t just possible— it’s inevitable.
