Ceili Kraus

First Place is Only the Beginning

BY RAPHAEL MAURICE

“You’ve got to prepare your strategy, because if you don’t know what you’re doing, then you’re at a loss from the start.”

In the heart of Momence, a tradition has thrived since 1986 that brings young minds to the forefront of mathematical challenge: the Momence Invitational Math Competition. This year, an extraordinary achievement was celebrated as Ceili Kraus, a dedicated seventh-grader, alongside her math teammates, clinched first place on February 7. At such a tender age, Ceili’s accomplishment is a beacon of pride and joy—not just for her but for everyone involved. Yet, behind this victory lies a deeper question: what truly makes a mathematician? Is it innate talent, or does something more fuel such success?

Ceili offers a glimpse into her philosophy, emphasizing preparation over raw talent. “You’ve got to prepare your strategy,” she explains, “because if you don’t know what you’re doing, then you’re at a loss from the start.” This insight reveals that for Ceili and her team, success in mathematics extends beyond individual brilliance. It’s about strategic application, about knowing how and when to deploy their skills. Their first-place victory among 14 teams is a testament to this approach, showcasing their exceptional ability to combine talent with tactical prowess.

However, Ceili’s aspirations soar beyond the realm of mathematics. Inspired by a cousin who practices law, she dreams of entering the legal field, where she sees a parallel in the application of logic and reasoning. It’s a reminder that mathematics, in its essence, permeates almost every aspect of our lives, from the abstract to the tangible. As Ceili navigates her journey toward a legal career, she is already laying the foundation through her academic endeavors, recognizing the role of mathematics in evaluating evidence, understanding probability, and approaching problems systematically.

But Ceili is not just a cerebral figure; she embodies the harmony of mental and physical discipline. Engaged in gymnastics since the age of two, she dedicates several days a week to perfecting her skills on the beam, illustrating that her victories in mathematics are paralleled by her commitment to physical excellence. This dual dedication underscores a holistic approach to her pursuits, blending intellectual rigor with physical agility.

The dynamics of teamwork played a crucial role in their success at the math competition. Ceili recalls, “Half of our table would end up with different answers. We had to collaborate, share our methods, and through this collective effort, we often uncovered our mistakes.” This process of collaborative verification, of weighing evidence and approaches within a team context, was instrumental in their triumph. Ceili’s recounting of these moments lacks any hint of arrogance; her tone is one of humble reflection on a shared achievement and an optimistic outlook toward future challenges.

Ceili Kraus is a remarkable example of what young individuals can achieve when they harness their talents, prepare diligently, and engage collaboratively. As she progresses in her academic and athletic endeavors, her journey is a testament to the power of determination, the importance of teamwork, and the boundless potential of youth. As the Momence community and her school celebrate this significant achievement, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ceili and her teammates. Their victory is more than just a win in a competition; it’s a celebration of hard work, strategic thinking, and the bright future that lies ahead for these young achievers.
